Cold Rooms

Commercial buildings that are used to store goods are generally known as cold rooms. Manufacturer, wholesalers, customs, importers, exporters etc. use cold rooms in order to store their goods. Cold rooms consist of ports used for loading and unloading process from the trucks. Cold rooms are plain buildings that are transformed into a storage room for goods in industrial areas. In many places, railways or seaports are designed in such a way that the loading and unloading can be done directly. Pallets and cranes are used for lifting goods as the goods to be stored are usually in bulk quantity. Cold rooms can also be called as a godown. The goods that are stored are generally raw materials, finished goods, spare parts and the goods related to agriculture, medicine, etc.

History

Cold rooms were used in ancient period too but in the form of storage pits. Our forefathers did not use large structures as resources and knowledge was very less. Cold rooms are a more advanced form of storage pits.

Storage pits in the early days were rectangular rooms that were made up of stone and with a high ground floor. The storage pits have evolved and have become more specialized now and are known as cold rooms. Cold rooms are leading in towns as cities as people get a place to store their goods where it is completely safe.

Types of Cold rooms

Modern cold rooms are very functional. They provide extra cushion to the transportation in the supply of goods. The cold rooms are very effective in the regard to its service quality. Cold rooms are mostly useful for people whose goods need a certain time from the time of production till its maturity like cheese, wine etc. Vacker Kuwait deals with the following types of Cold rooms across the Kingdom of Kuwait such as Hawalli, Al Ahmadi, Sabah as Salim, Al Farwaniyah, As Salimiyah, Al Fahahil, etc.

  1. Overseas cold rooms

    These rooms are used for overseas trading. These cold rooms are the meeting place for buyers and sellers where they discuss and take orders. The buyers order goods in huge quantity and the manufacturer after the order is ready to be kept it in the cold rooms until the time of dispatch.

  2. Packing cold rooms

    Picking, checking, packing and labeling of goods is done in this cold rooms. India house, Asia house, Velvet house are some examples of packing cold rooms.

  3. Railway cold rooms

    These cold rooms were built near the station in railway hubs. The trains that are used in transportation of goods like coal, grains etc use this as their storage pits.

  4. Canal cold rooms

    Canal cold rooms were originated long ago when people use to travel by ship from one place to another with their valuable goods. These cold rooms were used by the sailors to store their goods before and after shipment.

Modern trends

Cold rooms nowadays use wide pallet racking system which makes the cold room look more organized and spacious. Goods are transferred from one rack to another using forklift truck. Modern cold rooms have solved the storing problems of the people. The retailing trends that are prevailing have been the main reason for cold room advancement. The goods are kept in a serial manner like if the goods are ready for dispatch; they are kept on the bottom rack and vice versa. Cold rooms are the distribution point of large scale manufacturers and exporters.

Cold rooms help in the preservation of agricultural products. They use refrigerators which eliminate rotting, damage caused by insects and sprouting. Cold rooms distribute goods on demand on a timely basis which helps in the stabilization of market prices. Goods that are edible are not stored for more than a year. Many products which are perishable in nature are stored in these rooms at a temperature of -25 °C. Without refrigerators, cold rooms are not possible. The cold rooms use two type of refrigeration system, Vapor absorption system and Vapor compression system. VAS, in comparison to other systems, is a bit expensive, is considered to be more operationally economical.
